Holy Seelenlust - Piet Swerts

Oratorio for soprano, tenor, children's choir, women's choir, male choir, two harps, two alto recorders, two pianos, string orchestra and wind ensemble

The oratorium Heilige Seelenlust is an unusual work in many ways. There is the interweaving of Song of Songs from the Bible with the poems by Angelus Silesius and there are the three choirs, two orchestras and two soloists, who not only engage in dialogue, but are also closely connected with the course of poetry, which was distributed in a consistent manner. about the vocal parties.

Although this composition is based on modality and polyphonic spelling, it is translated in the contemporary musical context. The musical layers are much more complex and the applied canon techniques are a spin-off of the composition techniques from the Renaissance. The sounding result is surprising.

Finally, the whole of the work carries with it an extremely positive message through the content of the text and its reproduction. It is not a dramatic work, but rather a festive work with a lot of timbre, rich in melisms, a lust for the ear and very accessible to a large audience.
