about

The oeuvre of Ernest van der Eyken, characterized by a strong preference for strings and for chamber music occupations, is stylistically indebted to the two extremes he met as a young man, either through his education or on his own initiative: the Flemish post-romanticism and the first modernist wave of the 20th century. From the ones he inherited a never-ending attention for lyricism; of the others a close ear for new, often bitter consonances. The ones tempered an overly rigorous application of atonality and dodecaphony; the others gave new dimensions to his thematic spelling and the underlying harmonic structures.

The melody is and remains the most important building block of Van der Eykens's compositions. The Two melodies for viola and piano (1942) with their smooth, almost "unendliche" melody, and some solo passages from the Octet for wind instruments (1999) are striking examples of this. Yet he never lets the lyrical flight get out of hand without being bound. In the "Second String Quartet" in the Allegro fugato and in several other fugatic passages he does not bother about his connection with age-old compositional techniques: Van der Eyken is a bridge builder between past and present.
